There are high rates of childhood adversity amongst those struggling with substance use and abuse. Often, substance use begins as a coping tool for dealing with intense emotions, but can itself become a primary problem that rewires the brain, making it virtually impossible to stop through will power alone. The person struggling with substance use is at high risk for further adverse experiences such as breakdown of relationships with family and friends, homelessness, violence, criminal activity, and involvement in the justice system.
